confidence mask
Trust as a gradient. The mask reads how sure the model is — solid where the estimate is certain, gently letting go where it isn’t.
What it’s for
A restorer working a damaged plate has a private rule: be bold where the image is intact, be gentle where it’s guessed. The confidence mask encodes exactly that judgement. It reads the depth or segmentation confidence channel — the model’s own estimate of how certain it is — and turns doubt into a soft falloff instead of a hard mistake.
low sets the confidence floor below which the
effect simply lets go, and high the ceiling
where it commits fully. gamma bends the trust
curve in between — cautious and forgiving, or decisive
right up to the edge of certainty.
Reach for this when: you want to prevent ugly edge-flicker on a silhouette where the matte is unstable; reconstructed holes should read as atmosphere rather than artefacts; an effect should fade out wherever the AI was only guessing.
Where it lives in the app
Add from the Masks panel. The mask appears as its own layer
on the timeline; assign it to one or more effects by setting
their target to point at this mask layer.

Pairs well with
- depth-bands mask — compose the two so an effect only fires where the depth is both in range and trustworthy. No flicker on the uncertain rim.
- blur / defocus — let the uncertain regions soften into haze instead of betraying the seams of the reconstruction.
- color grade — fade the grade out where the model was guessing, so the suspect areas read as mood, not error.
- chromatic aberration — fringing that dissolves on the uncertain edges, hiding the wobble in atmosphere.
